Recorded at Wildsound in North Minneapolis and Co-Produced and featuring multi-instrumentalist Andy Dee also features the talents of Minneapolis blues piano legend Bruce McCabe guitarist Kurt ‘Lightnin’ Rodman, tuba player Tom Pattock and rub-vest and percussion of Scott Sansby. The back-up vocals are by Cara Luft formerly of the “Wailin Jennys” and Nashville folk artist and songwriter Laurie McClain. “Broken Ground” is the most honest and best effort to date as it was recorded gorilla style with no drums and Charlie’s left foot being the time keeper much like in his live show. The tracks are varied stylistically running the gamut from story songs to jug band blues romps.
Ten of the thirteen tracks were recorded by Matthew Zimmerman in just seven hours at Wildsound using some of the best microphones on the planet and then overdubs and editing were done at Natchez Cave by Andy Dee. Back-up vocals, most of the bass guitar and cello were overdubbed using pro-tools over the internet in Nashville and Winnipeg and then everything was mixed and mastered back at Wildsound. It is sonically stunning and features some of Charlie’s best vocals and instrumental performances ever recorded.
