CHARLIE ROTH/I’m the Smile:

“The well traveled Minnesota folkie beat it down to Austin to round up a bunch of the equally mature musicians to craft up a lived in set that sounds like it knows of whence it speaks. With darkness running through it that almost seems to contradict the title, fans of meaty songwriting have a blue plate special to checkout here.” Chris Spector

“Charlie always had a stunning ability to blend musical genres and his voice is a pure delight …he transforms each song into gold ..the cream of musicians who play on this album brings the final touch of excellence ..what a beautiful album..Charlie is like a good french wine…years bring excellence” Mike Penard Americana DJ France

“An extremely accomplished collection of originals and covers, Roth and company pen authentic, timeless, rural sounds here, that any fan of blues, folk, country and Americana will adore.”

Tom Haugen Of Take Effect Reviews

“Charlie Roth’s vocals drip with crystal clear frailty as he spins a tale about a little girl named “Serenity” and her father’s struggles. Fans of meaty songwriting have a blue plate special to checkout here.”

Americana Highways

“Great music, easy to listen to and perhaps best of all, music that tells a story.” Paul Wilson Audiophile Review

Americana Highways presents this premiere of Charlie Roth’s “Serenity” from his upcoming release I’m the Smile due to be released on June 7th. I’m the Smile was produced by Charlie Roth & John Inmon; recorded, mixed and mastered by Pat Manske at The Zone Recording Studio in Dripping Springs Texas. “Serenity” is Charlie Roth on acoustic guitar, harmonica & vocals; John Inmon on acoustic, electric, slide, dobro & baritone guitar; Javier Chaparro violins; Mike Morgan on bass and Pat Manske on drums and percussion.

Charlie Roth’s vocals drip with crystal clear frailty, as he spins a tale about a little girl named “Serenity” and her father’s struggles. Javier Chaparro is utterly superlative on the violin, and the whole song assembles itself in layers between the two highlights of the vocals and the violin solos, with echoes you can feel through to the bone on harmonica and baritone guitar. “The only comfort you find is over ice cubes and glass… ‘Serenity’ sure is a pretty name.” Treat yourself to layers of I’m the Smile this June.

I wrote this song after meeting this young girl. Her dad Paul was taking his whole family camping at the Moccasin Creek Festival in Effingham Illinois. It took me 10 hours of driving to come up with the first verse. I took a break from it and wondered where it was leading me.

This song is about getting your life together after living as pickle, once you have been a pickle you can never be a cucumber again. Alcohol has taken away so many good dads from their families. I hope this song helps someone who is struggling. Personally, 3 years of making this record as a sober person has been a very good thing..Who knew sobriety could be so cool?

Serenity is hard to find even when you have gotten sober. If you don’t have a problem with alcoholism having a drink or two never hurts anyone. Party on Wayne! this song is not about you. Everybody knows someone who this song is about. I have known many and watched a few of them die. –Charlie Roth

“Charlie (and smile) can light up any venue with any audience, I know I’ve seen him tackle and win new audiences all over Scotland England and Ireland, pubs, house concerts, concert halls and festivals it’s all the same to Charle, he knows how to work with them all.” Rob Ellen Flyin Shoes Review

Here is the letter I had on Kickstarter in 2019 to make this CD a reality.

Hello Friends,

I am doing this fundraiser for first time ever for my 8th album, “I’m The Smile”, which I have been working on it for the last 3 years. It is definitely the best album I’ve ever made and I need to get it into the hands of as many people as possible

Six songs are my own compositions and I have also covered some songs written by friends. Most of the songs were found or written while I was down in Austin, Texas. I recorded most of them down there at a fantastic studio called, The Zone. Many classic albums by Robert Earl Keen, Ray Wiley Hubbard, Joe Ely and many other legends of Texas music were made there.

I had the good fortune to work with co-producer, John Inmon, who connected me with some of Austin’s finest session musicians who are legendary and also world renowned. His guidance was crucial to get these songs recorded in only four tracking days. John did the overdubs in his home studio which was quite a lot of work and cost me plenty. All well worth the price I paid.

Two of the tracks were recorded in Minnesota with the help of my good friend Michael Shynes. One of the songs, ’Where You’ll Be’, I wrote for my mother after she passed and was blessed from the beginning. The music video went viral and started a series of blessings and fortunate events that would continue to happen. That is why I expect great things for this music.

I wrote and recorded a song called, ‘Serenity’, and there is a Jonathan Byrd song on here called ‘Clean’…these are songs that could help someone struggling with addiction. I am proud to say that this is the first album I have made as a sober person. It’s been over 3 years now that I’ve been alcohol free. This music has helped me more than I ever imagined it could and, with your help, we can perhaps help others as I believe this is real medicine.

’Where You’ll Be’ helped me thru my grief after losing my mother and it seems to be helping others as so many of us have lost or are losing someone in our lives. When I play live, particularly Serenity, I have people come up to me and tell me how many years they have been sober. Its incredible meeting people who have been touched by the music.

The title track, ‘I’m The Smile’, was another song that seemed to just drop out of the sky as a message of comfort to a family member of ours who had lost her husband.

So now I am asking for your help to get this music to as many people as possible. I have hired a publicist for the first time in the USA we will be sending out 600 CD copies to DJ’s and music journalists all over the country. I also will be hiring a publicist in the UK, Ireland and the rest of Europe. We want to make well produced videos for more of these songs. Even though I am an old hand at making records, I have never been able to promote my music properly. I am a full time working musician and an independent singer songwriter with no label support so I can’t do this alone. Please help me if you are able.

If you can’t swing a donation right now, it would help me a lot by just sharing this link. To all my friends who have believed in my songs for all these years and to everyone who has hired me to play in their house concert, bar, or backyard BBQ, from the bottom of my heart: I THANK YOU!
